Oi Manawa – Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial
The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial is a place of remembrance and reflection for the devastating earthquakes that occurred in 2010 and 2011, which changed the city of Christchurch forever. The project was initiated to pay tribute to the lives lost, the survivors, and those who helped during the response and recovery that followed.
The south bank area of the memorial features a memorial wall that extends more than 100 meters along the curve of the Ōtākaro/Avon River. The wall is 3.6 meters high and inscribed with the names of the 185 people who lost their lives in the 2011 earthquake. Each name is written as requested by their family, with those who had personal or other relationships placed near each other, while other names are arranged in a chance pattern.
In addition to the memorial wall, the south bank area includes a wide terrace with seating and maple trees, designed to accommodate variable river levels. The area is a peaceful and beautiful space for individuals seeking quiet reflection, as well as for commemorative events.
Ibex Lighting is proud to have supplied lighting for this nationally significant project. The memorial is an important symbol of remembrance and resilience for the city of Christchurch and a testament to the strength and courage of its people.
